Overview

Sepsis is a medical emergency that was declared a global health priority by the World Health Organization in 2017 and continues to affect 1.7 million adults annually in the United States (according to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention). As a nurse, your role in screening and early recognition of sepsis is vital to early treatment and saving lives. Using a detailed case study, this article will increase your knowledge of the symptoms, diagnosis, treatment protocols (including an overview of the hour-1 bundle), and discharge guidelines for optimal patient outcomes.

Key Learning Outcomes

  1. Define sepsis patient presentation and risk factors.
  2. Describe risk factors associated with sepsis.
  3. Identify treatment for sepsis, in particular Hour-1 priority treatments.
