Presented by Ancc
Specialty Certifications

ANCC is pleased to announce that it will begin offering certification renewals for nurses who hold the current SANE-A and/or SANE-P certifications. More information will be communicated to certificants by October 1, 2026.

The SANE-A and SANE-P certifications and credentials will be available for renewal only at this time. You will be able to renew this certification every 5 years and continue to use the credential by maintaining your license to practice and fulfilling the ANCC renewal requirements in effect at the time you submit your application.

ANCC is continuing to explore options related to re-introducing SANE initial certification exams. Please check back to this page for updates coming soon.

Frequently Asked Questions: SANE-A and SANE-P Certification Transition

The following FAQ summarizes current information regarding the transition of SANE-A and SANE-P certification activities from the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN) to the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). Updates are expected as ANCC continues reviewing available options.

Will ANCC offer the SANE certification exams?

ANCC is currently reviewing options related to the SANE certification exams. If ANCC decides to re-introduce the exam, a group of SANE volunteers will be brought in to advise on eligibility criteria, including requirements related to hours, training, and exam preparation.

How can nurses pursue SANE certification now that IAFN is no longer managing the exams?

ANCC received all data from IAFN and is reviewing options related to potentially re-introducing the SANE certification exams. Updates are expected before the end of 2026. If the exams are re-introduced, there may be a delay in availability while exam development activities are completed. Nurses may check back for updates as more information becomes available.
