American Nurses Association mourns the passing of Dr. Faye Gary

ANA honors the legacy and impact of Dr. Faye Gary

SILVER SPRING, MD - The American Nurses Association (ANA) is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Faye Gary, EdD, MS, RN, FAAN. Dr. Gary was a trailblazing nurse leader, scholar, and steadfast champion for health equity, whose work expanded opportunity for generations of nurses and strengthened the profession’s commitment to behavioral health.

Dr. Gary provided visionary leadership across the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service and ANA Ethnic Minority Fellowship Program, the National Advisory Committee of the National Institute of Mental Health, and the National Institute of Minority Health Disparities. As an American Academy of Nursing Living Legend in addition to being an alumnus of the Ethnic Minority Fellowship, her commitment to mentorship, education, and workforce development helped nurses thrive in graduate study and step into leadership roles that advanced health equity for all people.

“Dr. Gary lived an extraordinary life as a fearless and tireless advocate for the nursing profession. She made tremendous strides to improve the status of the profession and health internationally while remaining incredibly focused on clearing the path for future nurses,” said Jennifer Mensik Kennedy, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, FAAN, President of the American Nurses Association.

ANA extends its heartfelt gratitude for Dr. Gary’s countless contributions and offers sincerest condolences to all who were shaped by her scholarship, guidance, and service. Her impact will continue to mold and inspire nursing for years to come.
