The 2nd Annual ANA Innovation Awards

The American Nurses Association (ANA) is proud to announce the 2020 ANA Innovation Awards, powered by BD, a global medical technology company. The awards highlight, recognize, and celebrate nurse-led innovation that improves patient safety and/or outcomes.

Awards will be presented to a nurse and a nurse-led team whose product, program, project, or practice best exemplify nurse-led innovation in patient safety and/or outcomes.

The ANA Innovation Awards include a $25,000 individual nurse award and a $50,000 nurse-led team award. The money supports translational research, development, prototyping, production, testing, and implementation for an innovative product, program, project, or practice transformative to patient safety and/or outcomes. Winners will have one year to further develop their innovation and will present their outcomes at an ANA event.

2020 Winners

Winner of the Individual Nurse Award

Janice Tedder, BSN, FNP, IBCLC
Misunderstanding a baby’s behavior contributes to poor parent-child attachment, decreases parent confidence, and causes mothers to add formula, begin solids prematurely, or give up breastfeeding altogether. Tedder’s innovation, HUG Your Baby uses family-friendly language, inspiring video of parents and babies, engaging handouts and case studies to help parents, and the nurses who serve them, understand babies and anticipate how changing development impacts both the parent-child relationship and the breastfeeding experience. HUG Your Baby raises parents’ curiosity about what a baby is “saying,” prevents a negative interpretation of the baby’s behavior, enhances parent confidence, promotes breastfeeding duration, and sets the stage for appreciating the importance of understanding child development in the months and years to come.

Winner of the Nurse-led Team Award

Joseph Ferry, RN and Taofiki Gafar-Schaner, BSN, RN
Ferry and Gafar-Schaner developed SafeSeizure™ to improve and standardize the process of implementing seizure precaution protocols by providing a protective bed rail pad that focuses on patient safety and nurse workflow. At present, bed rail protection for seizure precautions remains non-standardized. Existing bed rail pads are often too large, difficult to store, bed/brand specific, and expensive. Due to the existing products' inefficiencies, cost, and poor availability, nurses frequently rely on linen as a solution to protect their patients. Aside from being unsightly and unprofessional, linen usage is unsafe. Linen and tape are reservoirs for bacteria and can remain on railings for hours and sometimes days, often becoming visibly soiled. These linens can house highly dangerous microbes that can increase the chances of hospital-acquired infections. SafeSeizure™ pads solve all these problems at a fraction of the cost of current market products. These patented inflatable seizure pads are convenient, compact, and easy to clean.

Past Winners

Winner of the Individual Nurse Award

Kathleen Puri, MSN, RN: A bedside nurse and nursing educator with more than 30 years of experience, Puri knows that clean hands are the best way to prevent deadly hospital- acquired infections. Her creation, Fitsi, is a bedside caddy that allows patients in various health care settings to easily clean their own hands and access and store their personal items, such as cell phones and glasses, without the assistance of a caregiver. Fitsi can help reduce the risk of infection and patient falls, while improving the patient experience and saving providers time.

Winner of the Nurse-led Team Award

Michael Wang, MBA, MSN, RN, and Paul Coyne, DNP, MBA, MSF, RN, AGPCNP-BC: Wang and Dr. Coyne designed iN to address the preventable patient injuries and medical errors they witnessed as bedside nurses. iN is a wall-mounted device placed directly behind the patient’s bed. It uses computer vision to detect potential risks to patients, while simultaneously aggregating data from electronic health records and other medical devices. Through predictive algorithms, iN can help staff mitigate the risk of medical errors, assess patient workloads, and enhance staffing.
