ANCC and RNS Announce Board Certification for Rheumatology Nursing

SILVER SPRING, Md. – The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) and the Rheumatology Nurses Society (RNS), a nonprofit organization representing nurses who are engaged in clinical practice, education, and research for the care of patients with rheumatic disease, announced the launch of a new certification through portfolio for Rheumatology Nursing.

The ANCC certification through portfolio is an alternative assessment method for credentialing individual registered nurses in their specialty area. Nurses document their skills, knowledge, abilities, and career accomplishments as part of the application and assessment process. Certification through portfolio requires rigor equivalent to that of examinations to meet accrediting bodies’ criteria to determine proficiency through a peer review process informed by nurse experts.

Nurses certified through the ANCC portfolio assessment method are regarded as competent in their specialties and are considered to be among the highest-qualified nurses in the world. These credentials foster both professional growth and job satisfaction while demonstrating a nurse’s commitment to providing excellent care.

ANCC incorporates the latest evidence-based research in nursing practice standards and is the only nurse credentialing organization to achieve ISO 9001:2008 certification in the design, development, and delivery of global credentialing services and support products for nurses and health care organizations.

"Certification through portfolio is a patented method for credentialing specialty nurses, and we are pleased to introduce Rheumatology Nursing as the newest ANCC portfolio credential. We look forward to a continued partnership with the Rheumatology Nurses Society to support the development and education of nurses who specialize in the care of patients with rheumatic diseases," said Executive Vice President and Chief ANCC Officer Linda C. Lewis, MSA, RN, NEA-BC, FACHE.

“It is an honor to have partnered with the ANCC in the fostering and launch of the Rheumatology Nursing board certification through portfolio. This is a significant collaborative milestone for nursing, nursing specialties, and specifically, rheumatology nurses, which further demonstrates the passion and commitment that all nurses have for the care of their patients every day. Rheumatology Nurses now have the recognized instrument of ANCC board certification to validate their competence by applying the knowledge that they have acquired through lifelong learning and experience in rheumatology. This marks a new season of the rheumatology nursing specialty where we look to the future to experience the lasting impact that board certified rheumatology nurses will have on nursing, our specialty, and patients and families within our practice,” stated Sheree C. Carter, PhD, RN, Immediate Past-President of RNS. The new Rheumatology Nursing certification through portfolio credential is open to all rheumatology nurses, including RNS members, who will receive a discount on the certification application fee. Information on this new certification can be found at www.nursecredentialing.org/RheumatologyNursing.
