Overview

Innovation is a huge focus of nurse leaders as they look internally in their hospitals to develop solutions to operational issues, but the process is new for many and involves many issues/steps that create confusion and requires risk-taking, culture change, and specific processes that are new and often intimidating. It ultimately can create financial issues and loss of idea ownership if done incorrectly. The actual how-to’s of how to take ideas to market, to foster a culture and infrastructure of innovation, how to gather insight on needs, etc. are key issues that this workshop provides - offering practical solutions to those questions and skill-needs, allowing nursing innovators to succeed in developing and marketing new products.

There is also a myth that brilliant ideas come from the minds of geniuses, working mostly on their own and having skills and an understanding of the world that others cannot grasp. In reality, most innovations and changes in the world come from a much more rigorous process of learning through trial and error and a deep understanding of what people find meaningful and important. There are approaches to innovation that can be learned and developed, unleashing deep creative confidence to create real impact and change.

The American Nurses Association is excited to offer a new and unique workshop that sheds light on these methods of innovation and how to bring creative approaches of problem identification and problem solving into both your work and personal lives. In this roll up your sleeves approach, Human Centered Design, or Design Thinking, will be taught and integrated in with other familiar methods such as Lean, and improvement, alongside change, leadership, creativity and behavior change.

In the workshop you can expect to:

  • Develop empathy: Learn techniques to surface the needs of the people you are creating solutions for; what problems are they trying to solve?
  • Unleash innovation: Gain a better understanding to what blocks our own creativity and ability to innovate
  • Change culture: Learn approaches to developing microclimates of change and innovation within environments that may not be geared for working in this way
  • Break biases: Learn why we get stuck in our current ways of doing things and the role of play and a child’s mind in getting out of our own mental valleys.
  • Expand thinking: Hear real-world stories of how the innovation and creativity approaches have been used to create a more dynamic toolkit for change agents.
  • Build confidence: Practice a select bundle of methods to provide you with take-home tools to help you develop your own creative confidence to lead changes in your organizations and in your personal lives.
  • Get real: Learn the pathways to take our ideas into reality, both within our organizations and into a commercialized product for the marketplace
  • Take action: Getting real with our ideas and how we can create prototypes to learn the true needs of our users/patients/customers.

Big change starts small, and lasting change is completely within your reach. Come join us to build your innovation muscles and grow your creative confidence with you peers. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Learning Outcomes

  • Learn strategies and techniques for encouraging innovation in staff
  • Understand how to implement strategies for developing and implementing innovative ideas
