Overview

The focus of this course is the understanding of health information systems to ethically manage data, information, knowledge, and technology to communicate effectively; provide safe and effective patient care; and utilize appropriate databases to search for evidence based on research to enhance the quality of patient care and inform practice decisions. Development of competencies in using patient care technologies, and information management systems is emphasized.

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Describe selected patient-care technologies to address the needs of a diverse patient population and support safe nursing practice.
  • Analyze data from all relevant sources, including technologies, to inform the delivery of care. 
  • Examine the use of information systems to document interventions related to achieving nursing-sensitive outcomes including the use of standardized terminologies. 
  • Discuss the principles of data integrity, professional ethics, and legal requirements related to data security, regulatory requirements, confidentiality, and client's right to privacy.

DNP, MSN, RN, CNE

Dr. Sally Carlisle is the Faculty Development Specialist for Chamberlain University as well as Visiting Professor for the RN-BSN program. She has worked at Chamberlain since 2013 as Dean of Academic Affairs, Associate Dean of Faculty and SimCare Center Manager. Her previous teaching experience took place in traditional classroom and clinical settings as well as the online environment. This experience encompasses Adult Health Nursing, Aging, Health Assessment, Transition to Practice, Lifespan Development, and Nursing Informatics courses in both pre-licensure and RN-BSN programs.

 

Dr. Carlisle received her BSN from Truman State University, MSN in Nursing Education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, and DNP in Healthcare Systems Management from Chamberlain University. Most of her clinical practice has been spent in community-based hospice case management.
