Overview

The ANA Nursing Knowledge Center presents Fundamentals of Nurse Staffing Building an Optimal Staffing Model. This course provides insight on how to build an optimal staffing plan that includes staffing model construction, data-driven staffing plans for work environments, formulas, and management of overtime. With short-term margin pressure, rising nurse salaries, and an impending workforce shortage, staffing and scheduling are top concerns of nurses.

This course consists of 6 modules where you will be immersed in independent study combined with multimedia knowledge checks. All resource materials will be provided as you gain new knowledge, skills, and abilities that will help you understand, build, and integrate the components of a staffing plan.

Rita Barry, BSN, RN, As nurse manager of scheduling and staff deployment at a 551-bed academic medical center, she is responsible for the overall logistics and deployment of a centralized scheduling and staffing system. Her experience in various nursing leadership and clinical roles has afforded her opportunities to work closely with the direct care nurses participating in nursing’s shared governance model and be involved in the development of many innovative programs.

James Fenush, MS, RN, As director of nursing, clinical support services at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, he is responsible for designing, directing, implementing, and evaluating clinical programs and conducting performance improvement for all areas of clinical practice in collaboration with department chairs and administrators. He develops and approves operating and capital budgets for assigned clinical programs and areas, along with developing new programs and community service outreach in collaboration with physicians and administrators. He also determines and recommends appropriate staffing based on patient acuity and patient needs. His clinical and nurse leadership experience afforded him the opportunity to serve as the executive champion for the department of nursing’s staffing strategy.
