Overview

Chest thoracotomy tubes (CTTs) have been around for centuries, but not until the late 1950s did they become standard of care for treating empyema, pneumothorax, hemo thorax, hemopneumo - thorax, and pleural effusion. CTTs can be life-saving, but only if managed based on current best evidence.

The goal of this article is to assist nurses to provide better care for patients with a chest thoracotomy tube (CTT).

Key Learning Outcomes

  • Describe patient care related to insertion of a chest thoracotomy tube (CTT).
  • Discuss management of patients with a CTT in place.
