KSNA President Job Description

The President is the chief elected officer of the Kansas State Nurses' Association and as such represents the membership. In addition, the President is the elected leader of the Board of Directors, the Executive Committee and the Membership. This individual provides the vital link between leaders and policy makers within the association and those throughout the health care field.

The role of the President, therefore, clearly differs from that of the Executive Director who is employed by and accountable to the Board of Directors, managing organizational headquarters and working primarily with staff. The roles are complementary in advancing the purposes and functions of the association, but they are mutually exclusive in terms of primary responsibility and accountability.

Duties, Responsibilities, and Authority Within the limits of KSNA bylaws and policies, the President has the responsibility and the authority to accomplish the duties set forth below.

  1. Serves as presiding officer for the Convention body, meetings of the Board of Directors and the Executive Committee.
  2. Serves as ex-officio member of all standing committees with the exception of the Nominating Committee.
  3. Serves as delegate-at-large to ANA House of Delegates.
  4. Serves as the representative of KSNA to the ANA Constituent Assembly.
  5. Offers guidance and counsel to the Executive Director.
  6. Reports to the membership at the Annual Convention and at other appropriate times, such as the President's Message column of The Kansas Nurse.
  7. Submit a President's Report at each Board meeting and a written annual report to the entire membership.
  8. Prepares agendas for the Convention and Board of Directors meetings in cooperation with the Executive Director.
  9. Represents the Kansas State Nurses Association as official spokesperson on matters of policy, as provided in the bylaws of the association and within the confines of the policies established by the Board of Directors. Uses discretionary power to assign responsibility for such representation as necessary.
  10. Accepts the role of public relations ambassador for the nursing profession in Kansas. Represents and speaks for the profession with allied health organizations, other nursing groups, legislative and governmental bodies, and the public.
  11. Offers guidance and consultation to elected and appointed officials of the association, constituents, and membership as required.
  12. Prepares a performance evaluation of the Executive Director at least annually with contributions from the Board of Directors.
  13. Orients the President-Elect to the role and responsibilities of the President ensuring an orderly transition at the completion of the term of office through an ongoing communication process.
  14. Reviews and updates the purposes and goals of the Association in collaboration with the Board of Directors.
  15. Plans and organizes the Board orientation to be held annually.
  16. Calls emergency meetings of the Executive Committee and/or Board of Directors, if needed.
  17. Replaces any member holding an appointed position who has not fulfilled the duties of that position, and/or has not acted in accordance with the Bylaws; such action shall have approval of the Board of Directors.

In addition, to these specific responsibilities, the KSNA President assumes all duties, responsibilities and authority within the scope of responsibility of the KSNA Board of Directors members.
