The purposes of the Kansas Nurses Foundation are to receive and manage funds to support nursing education and scientific activities of Kansas nurses through loans, scholarships and research grants.

    In 2001 the Kansas Nurses Foundation will award five ($500) scholarships to applicants using the general scholarship criteria. Additionally, in 2001 there are thirteen endowed scholarships available 3 ($1,000), 6 ($500) and one ($300), one ($300) research grant, and one ($500) managed scholarship awarded for applicants meeting specific criteria established through managed or endowed scholarships. The requirements are listed for these specific scholarship applicants. Applicants not awarded managed or endowed scholarships will automatically be considered for one of the five general KNF scholarships.

    KNF Scholarships will be awarded based on the following criteria:

    GENERAL SCHOLARSHIP CRITERIA

    1. The applicant must have a cumulative grade point average which is equivalent to a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    2. The applicant must be a Kansas resident.
    3. The applicant must submit a personal narrative describing their anticipated role in nursing in the state of Kansas, which will be evaluated by the Scholarship Committee.
    4. The applicant must submit three original letters of recommendation. Letters submitted from faculty advisor and employer, must be originals addressed to the KNF Scholarship Committee.
    5. Applicant must be enrolled in six credit hours or more per semester to be considered. Preference will be given to applicants engaged in full-time study.
    6. The Scholarship Committee shall consider the following priorities in making scholarship recommendations to the Board of Trustees
      1. R.N.s pursuing B.S.N.s
      2. Graduate and postgraduate nursing study
      3. Formal nursing programs - advanced registered nurse practitioner, etc.
      4. Students enrolled in undergraduate nursing programs.

    The Applicant is required to submit the following with the completed application form:

    1. Copy of official transcript of grades from last academic institution attended.
    2. Three letters of recommendation. One must be from a  faculty advisor and one must be from an employer. At least one should reflect applicant's commitment to nursing. All must be in original form, and must be signed and addressed to the KNF scholarship committee.
    3. Narrative statement describing your anticipated role in nursing in Kansas, upon completion of the nursing program.
    4. Letter from the school verifying the of applicant's acceptance in the nursing program.

    All completed applications are due on June 30, 2001


    KANSAS NURSES FOUNDATION RESEARCH GRANT

    The Kansas Nurses Foundation accepts applications for nurse directed research proposals that are consistent with the bylaws and requirements of a 501(c)(3) organizations. Research projects may include thesis and dissertation requirements.

    CRITERIA FOR RECIPIENT SELECTION:

    1. Researcher be a member of KSNA
    2. Researcher proposal is prepared according to the proposal guidelines.
    3. Proposal received by deadline of June, 2001
    4. Researcher must be focused on nursing or health care in Kansas

    PROPOSAL GUIDELINES:

    1. Completed Research Grant Application form which serves as a cover page
    2. One page resume for each investigator
    3. A three to five page proposal including:
      1. Brief literature review
      2. Problem statement
      3. Purpose and/or objectives
      4. Research design
      5. Protection of human subjects [This may be accomplished by submitting a copy of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) letter of approval.]
      6. Proposed budget
    4. Renewal applications must include:
      1. Problem statement
      2. Purpose and/or objectives
      3. Progress report

    REVIEW PROCESS:

    1. Proposals are reviewed by members of the Research and Special Projects Committee.
    2. Actions may include: approval with full or partial funding, approved but not funded, or not approved.

    GRANTEE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Upon completion of the research project, the grantee will provide KNF with a summary of the final results.
    2. The grantee may be requested to present a paper or poster at the annual convention of KSNA at his/her own expense.
    3. Any resulting publications are to include a statement regarding the level of support provided by KNF.
    4. If the agreement is not honored the grantee is to repay the amount awarded.

    2001 KNF ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIPS

    The General Scholarship Criteria will be applied in addition to the specific criteria as specified:

    * PATSY QUINT OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH NURSES ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

    1. R.N.s currently in Occupational Health pursuing a Baccalaureate Degree.
    2. Occupational Health Nurse pursuing a Master's Degree or Doctorate Degree with emphasis on Occupational Health.

    * DOROTHY ASTLE ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ($300)

    1. Be a Kansas Resident with preference given to applicants from KSNA District VII (Barton, Edwards, Kingman, Pawnee, Reno, Rice, Rush and Stafford counties)
    2. Have a cumulative GPA that is equivalent to a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    3. Carry six credit hours or more per semester to be considered, with preference given to applicants engaged in full-time study.
    4. The Scholarship Award shall be given according to the following priorities in descending order:

      A. Students enrolled in basic undergraduate nursing programs.
      B. Registered nurses completing their BSN will be eligible if no basic undergraduate applicants qualify or apply.

    * PAT DEVINE SCHOLARSHIP ($500)
    In addition to the general academic and professional criteria established by KNF, the following criteria are applied in the selection process:

    1. Priority will be given to registered nurses enrolled in a Kansas based master's program in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing.
    2. If no applicant qualifies under criterion #1, registered nurses who have established a career in Psychiatric Mental Health
      Nursing, but wish to improve their preparation by enrolling in a Kansas based B.S.N. program will be given second priority.
    3. If no applicant qualifies under criterion #1 or #2, the selection criteria will revert to the general KNF priorities.

    * GEORGE DEVANE CRNA STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

    1. Only students enrolled in a Kansas nurse anesthesia program which is currently certified by the Council on Certification of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists, are eligible.
    2. Only students of nurse anesthesia will be considered. CRNA's working toward a degree are not eligible.
    3. A GPA of 3.0 is required.
    4. Students currently enrolled are eligible but preference will be given to students in their 2nd year.
    5. A student with a greater economic need will be given preference when other criteria have been satisfied.

    * MORGAN-SANDERS ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

    1. Be a Kansas Resident
    2. Have a cumulative GPA that is equivalent to a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
    3. Carry six credit hours or more per semester to be considered, with preference given to applicants engaged in full-time study.
    4. The Scholarship Award shall be given according to the following priorities in descending order:
      1. RN's pursuing a BSN.
      2. Graduate students in nursing education, nursing administration, or adult education programs with priority given to Master's level then Doctoral level.
      3. Nonacademic nursing or nursing related programs leading to a certificate.
      4. Students enrolled in undergraduate BSN programs.
      5. Students enrolled in undergraduate ADN programs.
    5. Scholarship Restrictions

    Students enrolled in graduate or certificate program preparation for Clinical Nurse Specialists, Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Midwives and Nurse Anesthetists shall not be eligible.

    * ROBERTA D. THIRY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

    1. R.N.'s admitted to the BSN completion program at Kansas Wesleyan University will be given priority in the selection process.
    2. If no scholarship applicants qualify under criterion #1, second priority will be given to R.N.'s admitted to other Kansas BSN programs.
    3. If there are no scholarship applicants who qualify under criterion #1 or #2, the selection criteria will revert to the general KNF priorities.

    * KSNA DISTRICT 2 ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

    1. Applicant must have resided in Johnson, Leavenworth, or Wyandotte County for at least one year.

    * FRANK J. AND CHRISTINE R. BOUSKA ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

    In addition to the general KNF crtieria 1-5:
    l. Priority will be given for Western Kansas (west of highway 8l), rural-based RN admitted to a Kansas-based MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner Program which is offered by a NLNAC- accredited and KSBN-approved ARNP program.

    2. If no applicants qualify under #l, second priority be given to a Kansas-based RN admitted to a Kansas-based MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner Program, which is NLNAC- accredited school and KSBN-approved ARNP program, who is willing to practice at least one calendar year, post-graduation in a rural (federal designations) Kansas commuity as a primary care Family Nurse Practitioner.

    3. If there is no applicant who qualifies under criterion #l or #2, then third priority would be given to a RN admitted to a Kansas-based MSN program which is offered by a NLNAC-accredited school and a KSBN- approved ARNP program-for qualification as a CNS, CNM, or CRNA, in that order of priority. The ARNP would be willing to practice at least one calendar year, post-graduation in a rural (federal designations) Kansas community as an ARNP.

    * WESLEY SCHOOL OF NURSING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP (3 at $1000)

    Applications should be accompanied with documentation of Wesley School of Nursing affiliation for consideration of the Wesley School of Nursing Alumni Association Endowed Scholarship. For example: Send a copy of your mothers diploma and a copy of your birth certificate which bears her name and your name. Check the documentation you provide to KNF to ensure it gives sufficient proof that as the applicant you meet criterion #1.

    1. Graduates of Wesley School of Nursing, their children, grandchildren and nieces or nephews will be given consideration in selecting recipients of this scholarship.
    [Note: if there are no scholarship applications from Wesley alumni or their descendents, as specified above, for a 5 year period, the selection criteria will revert to the general KNF criteria].
    2. Kansas residence is waived for Wesley Graduates or descendants.

    * Florence J. Nelson Endowed Scholarship ($500)
    These critieria are the same as the KNF General Scholarship Criteria

    1. The applicant must have a cumulative grade point average which is equivalent to a 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
    2. The applicant must be a Kansas resident.
    3. The applicant must submit a personal narrative describing their anticipated role in nursing in the state of Kansas, which will be evaluated by the Scholarship Committee.
    4. The applicant must submit three original letters of recommendation. Letters submitted from faculty advisor and employer, must be originals addressed to the KNF Scholarship Committee.
    5. Applicant must be enrolled in six credit hours or more per semester to be considered. Preference will be given to applicants engaged in full-time study.

    DISTRICT 6-- ELIZABETH SEE ENDOWED RESEARCH FUND ($300)

    Applicants should complete the KNF Research Grant Application - Deadline June 30.
    1. Applicants must be a KSNA member requesting assistance to conduct nursing-directed research, including thesis and dissertation requirements of an education program. Scientific work can include historical, descriptive, empirical and experimental projects.

    MANAGED SCHOLARSHIP FUND CRITERIA

    A. All applicants for special scholarship monies will be held initially to the general Scholarship Criteria.
    B. The following specific criteria apply to the designated Managed Scholarship Funds.

    * Dorothy M. Ladd KSNA DISTRICT 9 SCHOLARSHIP ($500)

    1. Applicant must reside in Anderson, Franklin, Linn, or Miami County.
    2. Applicant must be a basic nursing student.
