2004 KNF Annual Report | 2005 KNF Annual Report History of the Kansas Nurses FoundationThe Kansas Nurses Foundation began as an idea generated by KSNA members at the 1976 convention. The development of a fund to receive tax exempt contributions for the support of nursing education and research was supported by the membership. After two years of work to develop By-Laws, seek incorporation and attain tax exempt status, the foundation became operational in January 1979. The purpose of the Kansas Nurses Foundation is to receive and manage funds derived from memorials, gifts, and contributions and to apply the income thereof to support charitable nursing education and scientific activities through grants, loans, or scholarships to individuals, organizations, and institutions engaged in nursing education or research. Donations are tax deductible, as KNF is a 501(C)(3) organization. The members and the Board of Trustees decided in 1981 to begin dispersing funds in very limited amounts. Two $250 scholarships were announced and 14 applications were received for review. In 1982, there were 26 applicants for the five $300 scholarships. One research grant of $300 was also awarded. Since 1981 a total of $41,600 in scholarships and research grants have been given to 126 students. The requests for information for information relative to 1983 funds began arriving in January, even before any announcement of fund availability. Current balance of assets to date as of 12/31/98 is $90,517.21. Comments from recent KNF Scholarship recipients:
