The American Nurses Association Center for Occupational and Environmental Health provides the following information received from The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA):
FDA recently launched a consumer update on the safe disposal of sharps outside of health care settings. EPA estimates that 9 million people use sharps at home to treat medical conditions, resulting in the disposal of more than 3 billion needles and other sharps each year. FDA warns patients and caregivers that people accidently stuck by discarded sharps are at risk of exposure to bloodborne viruses, including hepatitis and HIV. Learn more...
