ANA believes strongly in the value of Advanced Practice nurses and their contribution to improving access to health care services. ANA presented APRNs as one of the keys to solving America's health care crisis when outlining the need for their autonomous practice in Nursing's Agenda for Health Care Reform. ANA represents the interests of all APRNs: Certified Nurse Practitioners (NPs), Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNAs), Clinical Nurse Specialists (CNS), and Certified Nurse Midwives (CNMs).
ANA, together with Constituent Member (State) Associations, continues to work to remove geographic and practice setting limitations for APRNs, seeking fair and consistent treatment across the country. ANA is a founding member of the Coalition for Patients' Rights. This group is fighting the AMA's recent Scope of Practice initiative, which is attempting to limit the scope of practice for advanced practice nurses and other licensed professionals.
