A new informatics column is posted in OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing!
In Informatics: Where Is It?, Linda Thede, RhD, RN-BC, notes that we have come a long way since the 1980s; yet there is still a long road ahead. There has been progress to utilize information technology in full clinical systems. Also, the United States government is providing financial incentives for what is termed ‘meaningful use’ of electronic medical records (EMRs). Meaningful use, however, cannot be attained without information technology and solid informatics principles. This column reviews the progress made related to informatics in healthcare and discusses challenges that remain.
