Patient safety initiatives have focused primarily on medication
errors to date, but medical devices also contribute significantly to patient
injuries and deaths.
Promoting Safe Use of Medical
Devices, a recently posted OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in
Nursing article by Sonia Swayze, RN, MA and Suzanne Rich, RN, MA, CT describes
the Food and Drug Administration’s efforts to promote safe use of medical
devices by nurses at the point of care. The authors share what professional
nurses and professional associations can do to enhance safety associated with
medical devices. This article adds to the May 2009 OJIN topic,
