In 2013, ANA\California (ANA/C) member Sally Bixby, RN, MS, CNOR will become the first nurse
to serve as the president of the Tournament of Roses parade in Pasadena, California, a high-profile event watched by over 300 million television viewers each year. To take advantage of this historic opportunity to showcase the nursing profession before a worldwide audience, a group of California nurses have formed a non-profit organization called Bare Root, Inc., with the goal of raising funds to build the first ever ‘Nurses Float
’ for the parade. The creation of the ‘Nurses Float’ represents a unique, high-visibility opportunity to give thanks to nurses for all they do, and highlight the nursing profession as a rewarding, fulfilling career choice.
As the director of surgical services at City of Hope National Medical Center and Beckman Research Institute in Los Angeles, Bixby is excited about giving nurses the recognition they deserve. “The ‘Nurses Float’ is an opportunity to place the nursing profession on an international stage before millions of people, to show how important it is to support nurses because we are the anchors of the healthcare system,” said Sally. “It’s also a fun, inspirational and celebratory way to honor nurses and how we truly make a difference in the world.”
