The American Nurses Association (ANA) is pleased to announce the posting of the January 31, 2009 topic of OJIN: The Online Journal of Issues in Nursing, Obesity on the Rise: What Can Nurses Do?

The 5 new articles in this topic are a resource to help nurses take action to become more informed about obesity and to position themselves as role models and educators for their families, communities, and patients. The five articles offer the reader a comprehensive overview of overweight and obesity and include such topics as best nursing practices with practical information for patient care, the pediatric obesity epidemic, obesity in older adults, an overview of bariatric surgery, and best practices for safe patient handling. Each author seeks to maximize the ability of nurses to assist patients toward attaining a healthier life style through education, sensitivity, and knowledge of best practices.

ANA members have the first opportunity to access the most recent OJIN topic. When each new OJIN topic is posted, the previous topic becomes available to non-members. The September 30, 2008 topic, Professional Pathways in Nursing: Options to Seek, Start, and Sustain a Career is now accessible to all readers.
