The American Nurses Association (ANA) has received the following information from Trust for America’s Health, a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to saving lives by protecting the health of every community and working to make disease prevention a national priority:
The H1N1 pandemic has exposed many weaknesses in our ability as a nation to respond to an emergency. In its latest report on national and statewide emergency preparedness, the Trust for America’s Health has found many states still lacking basic preparedness and response capabilities. The report, "Ready or Not? 2009: Protecting the Public's Health from Disease, Disasters, and Bioterrorism" also reveals how the “Band-Aid®” approach to augment the underfunded and understaffed public health system’s ability to protect communities from the pandemic has failed.
