Tim Porter-O’Grady Named Chair of American Nurses Foundation

SILVER SPRING, MD – The American Nurses Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the American Nurses Association (ANA), has named Tim Porter-O’Grady, DM, EdD, ScD (h), APRN, FAAN, FACCWS, as the new chair of the Board of Trustees. Porter-O’Grady, previously vice chair of the Foundation’s board, has more than 40 years of health care experience.

Tim Porter-O'Grandy Porter-O'Grady succeeds past Foundation Chair Joyce J. Fitzpatrick, PhD, MBA, RN, FAAN, who stepped down after more than four years of service.  “I am excited about the opportunity to build on the strong groundwork laid by Joyce Fitzpatrick and the board of the Foundation,” said Porter-O’Grady. “I look forward to working with the Foundation board and leadership to advance its mission, strengthen its philanthropic efforts and engage the larger health care community. This partnership will have a lasting impact on the interests of the nursing profession and the people it serves during a time of significant change.”

“Tim brings an extraordinary breadth of experience to his new role,” said Kate Judge, executive director of the Foundation. “Under his leadership, we will advance our mission to transform health care through the power of nursing.”

As senior partner at Tim Porter-O’Grady Associates, Inc., an Atlanta-based health care consulting firm, Porter-O’Grady is noted for his work on shared governance models and clinical leadership. Additionally, he holds professorships at both Arizona State University College of Nursing and Health Innovation and The Ohio State University College of Nursing. Porter-O’Grady also serves as an adjunct professor at Emory University School of Nursing in Atlanta.

Porter-O’Grady’s work has been published in more than 200 professional journal articles and 23 books. An eight-time winner of the American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Healthcare Book of the Year Award, he has been recognized by the American Organization of Nurse Executives with their Lifetime Achievement Award and by the American Nurses Association with its Luther Christman Award.

Porter-O'Grady holds two doctorates, one in learning behavior from Nova Southeastern University and a second in organizational and systems leadership from the University of Phoenix. Additionally, he holds a Doctor of Science degree from the Medical University of Ohio. Porter O’Grady is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and is a clinical Fellow of the American College of Clinical Wound Specialists.
