Timpanogos Regional Hospital Receives 2016 Pathway Award® Sponsored by Cerner
Silver Spring, Md. — The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) has awarded Timpanogos Regional Hospital the 2016 Pathway Award®. Timpanogos Regional Hospital is a full-service emergency care facility specializing in heart care, orthopedics, maternity and neonatal care in Orem, Utah.
The $25,000 Pathway Award honors a project proposal in a Pathway to Excellence® designated organization that demonstrates innovation and technology to create a positive nurse practice environment. The monetary award — sponsored by Cerner, a global leader in health care technology — will be used to further implement and expand the project. This year's award was presented Thursday at the ANCC Pathway to Excellence Conference® in Philadelphia.
"The ANCC Pathway Award gives us the opportunity to celebrate innovative nursing projects," said Eva Karp, RN-BC, MBA, chief clinical officer and senior vice president, Cerner. "It's phenomenal how much we are able to achieve as a community. Timpanogos is connecting what matters and we are proud to support its future efforts."
Timpanogos Regional Hospital's winning proposal—Mom2Baby iPads—was developed to decrease the stress of mothers and family members who are separated from infants admitted to the hospital's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Through Mom2Baby, mothers at Timpanogos are now able to see their babies in the NICU using iPads and FaceTime, an Apple Inc. application that allows users to make video calls to other FaceTime-enabled devices (iPads, iPhones, etc.).
"Nurses really wanted to improve the patient experience and help connect mothers and babies, even if it's remotely. That's where nurse innovation kicked in," said Timpanogos Regional Hospital Chief Nursing Officer Sandy Ewell, MBA, RN, BSN.
Nurses within the NICU multidisciplinary team were involved in developing the Mom2Baby project. The grant funded by the Pathway Award will be used to investigate and implement commercially developed technology systems to expand the Mom2Baby program.
"On behalf of our NICU nurses and staff, I'm thankful to ANCC and Cerner for awarding us the grant to expand the connection between mothers and babies, along with their family and friends, made possible by innovative information technology," Ewell said. "It's gratifying to know that soon, we will have the resources to support a much more superior product to help us reach this goal."
"Frontline nurses in Pathway-designated organizations are key partners in identifying ways to provide exceptional care and are empowered to make a difference in each patient's health care experience," said Christine Pabico, director, Pathway to Excellence Program®. "The Mom2Baby project is a great example and I'm always eager to find out what Pathway nurses will do next."
