Shiftwork and Nurse Fatigue
The ramifications of nurse fatigue are serious. Scientific evidence links shift work and long working hours to many health effects including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Fatigue can also affect a nurse’s ability to deliver optimal patient care. Research links fatigue to an increased risk of errors, decline in memory, reduced ability to learn, increased risk-taking behavior, and impaired mood and communication skills.
