Overview
Nurse retention and attrition is a huge issue, and part of the reason is that nurses new to an organization, role, or to the profession are often not as prepared as necessary to deal with the various issues and stress that comes with this new role. Successful mentoring and preceptor strategies make a huge difference in educating nurses on the way things are done, supporting them through the stress and learning process, etc. Doing so has a big impact on nurse retention and on empowering nurses to be more accountable and effective.

Donna King has over forty years of health care experience in various nursing and executive positions, in diverse hospital and health care system roles. The majority of her career has been with the Advocate Health Care system. She has served as Vice President of Clinical Operations and as Chief Nursing Executive for over twenty four years. In this role she has been responsible for nursing, emergency medicine, surgery, cardiology, diagnostic imaging, and the pharmacy programs. Besides these patient care services, Donna has also managed professional development, quality, regulatory programs, and has been the institution’s administrative liaison for the system’s centralized laboratory services. In addition, she has led her current organization through the Magnet Recognition® journey, achieving this prestigious certification for the third time in 2017.
